CATHEDRAL CITIES is a national tourist and cultural cooperation network that has been set up as an independent non-profit-making organisation under the protection of Constitutional Law 1/2002 of 22nd March and complementary regulations, with full legal and public personality.

María Antonia Trujillo, the Minister for Housing, signing the Book of Honour of Plasencia Town Council in the presence of the Mayoress.

The network was set up in Plasencia on 8th February 2006 with a total of twelve founder members to represent the cities of Avila, Badajoz, Baeza, Burgos, Córdoba, Coria, Cuenca, El Burgo de Osma, León, Salamanca, Zaragoza, and Plasencia. The ceremony was held at the Parador de Turismo (high-class hotel) and presided over by María Antonia Trujillo, the Minister for Housing, in order to support the objectives of the Network, and by the Mayoress of Plasencia, Elia María Blanco Barbero. Six new members later joined: Alcalá de Henares and Jaén (13/09/06), Lugo and Lleida (09/03/07), and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tudela (06/05/08) to give a current total of 18 towns or cities.

According to the charter that governs the operation of the Network, its objectives are:

a) Taking joint action to promote and defend the urban, architectural, environmental, historical, and cultural heritage of the municipalities of which it is formed, in particular their cathedral heritage, and carrying out common projects and proposals to be presented and processed before Spanish administrations and world institutions.

b) Establishing policies for exchanging experiences and results regarding matters raised and resolved in each of the member municipalities, thus contributing to the international projection and the mutual knowledge and respect of peoples, cultures, and traditions, and the building of Europe.

c) Planning and developing a policy of tourist production and promotion and the dissemination of images so as to correspond to the interests of the member municipalities of the Association.

d) Planning a tourist and cultural policy in keeping with its objectives.

In order to achieve these goals, The Cathedral Cities will establish the necessary constitutional infrastructures and advice and assistance services, will facilitate the exchanging of information between its members and other associations and bodies with similar interests, will organise and take part in meetings, seminars, and congresses, will promote publications and documents concerning matters of their competence, will promote historical research, will promote the designing and marketing of tourist and cultural products relating to the architectural and artistic heritage of cathedrals, and will also promote any additional activity concerned with the achieving of its ends subject to current legislation.

The current President of The Cathedral Cities is Pilar Alcober Lamana in representation of Zaragoza. The General Secretariat is permanently located in Plasencia in the province of Cáceres.
